Southern California doesn’t get much of what most people might consider a “true” winter, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still make my own little snowman!
Chill Charlie is the perfect little project to make up and send to loved ones to pass around a little holiday cheer!

Some notes before we get started!
Materials:
- Small amounts of worsted weight yarn of your choice in
- White
- Black
- Red
- Orange
- US F/3.75mm crochet hook
- 2 safety eyes (9mm diameter)
- Tapestry needle
- Fiberfill for stuffing
- 1 brown pipe cleaner
Skill Level: Advanced beginner
Size: Approximately 7 inches from base to top of hat
Pattern Notes: Unless otherwise specified, this pattern is worked using the amigurumi method. Rows are worked in a continuous spiral. No need to slip stitch at the end of a row. To keep track of where I’m at in the pattern, I like to use a brightly colored paperclip as a stitch marker in the first stitch of each row. Use whatever feels most fun and comfortable for you! The amigurumi technique is also very forgiving in terms of gauge! I tend to be a tight crocheter, so I usually start with a slightly larger hook than some patterns call for. If you have a standard or loose gauge, simply size down your hook until the stitches look right for you!
Construction: Body and head are worked as one piece starting from the base and working up toward the head. Hat, scarf, and buttons are made separately.
Abbreviations (US terms):
- ch: chain
- slst: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- BLO: back loop only
- FLO: front loop only
- inc: single crochet increase (2 single crochet stitches into the same stitch)
- dec: single crochet decrease (crochet 2 crochet stitches together)
- st: stitch(es)
- [number]: indicates number of stitches in each round or row

With white yarn
Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]
Round 2: inc in each st around [12]
Round 3: (inc, sc in next st) around [18]
Round 4: (inc, sc in next 2 st) around [24]
Round 5: (inc, sc in next 3 st) around [30]
Round 6: (inc, sc in next 4 st) around [36]
Round 7: (inc, sc in next 5 st) around [42]

Place safety eyes between rows 38 and 39 approximately 9 stitches apart.
Round 45: (dec, sc in next 2 st) around [18]
Stuff head.
Round 46: (dec, sc in next st) around [12]
Round 47: dec around [6]
Finish off. Stitch top hole closed and weave in ends.
Carrot
With orange yarn
Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring [4]
Rounds 2-3: sc in each st around [4]
Round 4: inc, sc in next 3 st [5]
Finish off. Leave long tail for sewing.
Scarf
With red yarn
Ch 91
Round 1: dc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across [90]
Finish off. To make tassels, cut 5, 4 inch long lengths of red yarn. On side of scarf with remaining yarn ends, fold 2 cut yarn lengths in half, insert hook between 1st and 2nd stitches and pull up folded loops. Pull loose tails through loop created and pull tight to secure. Trim tassel ends to desired length. Repeat on opposite side of scarf with remaining 3 lengths of cut yarn.
Hat
With black yarn
Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]
Round 2: inc in each st around [12]
Round 3: (inc, sc in next st) around [18]
Round 4: (inc, sc in next 2 st) around [24]
Round 5: In BLO, sc in each st around [24]
Rounds 6-10 (5 rows): sc in each st around [24]
Round 11: In FLO, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 st) around [30]
Round 12: Working in base of round 11, long sc around each dc of previous row (this will add stiffness to hat brim) [30]
Finish off. Leave long tail for sewing. Wrap small length of red yarn around base of hat and tie to secure.
Buttons (make 2)
With black yarn
Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring, slst to first st [6]
Finish off. Leave long tail for sewing.
Making Up:
Sew carrot nose between eyes and using a small amount of black yarn, embroider a smile. Sew hat to top of head. Fold scarf in half, pull loose ends through the loop you just created and pull to secure around neck. Sew buttons to body. Cut a brown pipe cleaner in half and fold ends to create branches, place in sides of body. Chill with your finished Charlie!
